What to check before buying jewelry through Sugargoo

Jewelry listings photograph beautifully and QC less well, because the details are tiny. Ask Sugargoo for close-ups in the order remark and look for:

• Plating colour — even across clasp, chain and pendant. Gold tones that differ between parts are the giveaway.
• Stone settings — stones sitting level, no glue visible at the edges.
• Clasp and jump rings — closed and sturdy; this is where chains break.
• Chain length — listed in centimetres; a 40–45 cm chain sits at the collarbone on most adults.

The card notes give each house's background where it's well documented — Van Cleef & Arpels' clover-shaped Alhambra motif dates from 1968, for instance — which helps when you compare the design in the photos with the original.

Verdict: For jewelry, the QC close-up matters more than the listing photo. Ask for it before you approve.

How do you size a belt from a Sugargoo listing?

Belt listings are sized in centimetres of length, usually in 5 cm steps (90, 95, 100, 105…), and the number refers to the belt, not your trouser size. The simplest way to choose:

1. Take a belt you already wear and measure from the buckle's pin to the hole you use.
2. Pick the listing size closest to that, or the next size up if you're between two.
3. If you don't own a belt, measure your waist where the belt sits and add around 5 cm.

Also check the strap width (3–4 cm is typical for men's belts, narrower for dress belts) and that the buckle in the QC photo is the one in the listing — many belt listings offer several buckles under one link.

Buying a watch through Sugargoo: movement, battery, customs

The 13 watch listings are where prices spread out: the top of this sheet is $580.44. Before ordering one through Sugargoo:

• Movement. The listing should say quartz (battery) or automatic (mechanical). They feel different and cost differently.
• Battery. Quartz watches ship with a button cell. Sugargoo's calculator asks for a product category because some lines don't accept batteries or electronics — pick the watch category when you estimate, so the lines shown can carry it.
• Size. Case diameter in millimetres and strap length. Links can be removed; ask whether spare links are included.
• QC. Ask for a photo of the watch running, the dial straight-on, and the caseback.

Watches with brand logos carry the same customs risk as any branded item: customs can detain goods that infringe a registered trademark whatever their value. Declare the parcel accurately; the duty calculator shows what tax a watch adds in your country.

Verdict: A watch is the one item on this sheet worth insuring. Sugargoo's cover costs 1–4% of the insured value.

Looking after plated jewelry and belts

Most necklaces and bracelets at this price are plated rather than solid metal, and plating lasts longer with a little care. Store pieces separately so chains don't scratch each other, keep them away from perfume, lotion and chlorinated water, and wipe them dry after wearing. Tarnish on plated silver-tone pieces usually starts where the piece touches skin most — the clasp and the back of a pendant.

Belts need less care but the same honesty about materials: listings say "leather" loosely. If the material matters to you, ask in the order remark for a close-up of the belt's edge, where coated fabric and genuine leather look quite different. For watches, keep the original packaging if the listing includes it; Sugargoo's add-ons include reinforced packing if you want extra protection for a watch box.

Using small pieces to fill a Sugargoo parcel
